Abstract

Innovation and education are pivotal drivers of sustainable national development, particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria. This chapter examines the role of innovation-oriented education in promoting economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability. It highlights how integrating creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and entrepreneurship into the educational system equips learners with the skills and competencies necessary to address national challenges. The chapter also explores the contribution of innovation education to human capital development, technological advancement, job creation, and the reduction of socio-economic inequalities. Furthermore, it identifies key challenges hindering the effective implementation of innovation-driven education in Nigeria, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, curriculum gaps, and limited teacher capacity. The study underscores the urgency of strategic investments, policy reforms, and institutional support to ensure that education serves as a catalyst for sustainable national development in Nigeria.
