ENHANCING RESEARCH VISIBILITY THROUGH SCOPUS-INDEXED PUBLICATIONS: IMPERATIVES FOR TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Research is widely recognized as one of the core mandates of tertiary institutions alongside teaching and community service. Through research, universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education generate new knowledge, provide solutions to societal challenges, promote innovation, and support national development. However, the value of research is fully realized only when research findings are effectively disseminated through credible publication platforms. In recent years, the emergence of digital publishing platforms and international indexing databases has transformed scholarly communication, enabling researchers to reach wider audiences and enhance the impact of their work. Among these platforms, the Scopus database has gained global recognition because it indexes high-quality, peer-reviewed journals that meet rigorous editorial and ethical standards. Despite the increasing importance of Scopus-indexed publications in academic promotion, institutional ranking, research funding, and international collaboration, many researchers in Nigerian tertiary institutions continue to publish predominantly in local journals with limited global visibility. Challenges such as inadequate awareness of Scopus requirements, high article processing charges, insufficient mentorship, weak institutional research support, and limited funding have constrained researchers' participation in internationally indexed journals. This paper reviews the concept of Scopus-indexed journals, discusses their significance for researchers and tertiary institutions, examines barriers to publishing in Scopus-indexed journals, and proposes practical strategies for increasing research visibility through international scholarly publishing. The paper concludes that strengthening institutional research support mechanisms and building researchers' publication capacity are essential for improving Nigeria's contribution to global knowledge production.
