ACADEMIC BRIEF AS A STRATEGIC INSTRUMENT FOR EFFECTIVE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA: HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT, IMPORTANCE AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

This paper examines the academic brief as a strategic planning instrument for effective university management in Nigeria. The paper traces the historical development of the academic brief within the Nigerian university system and discusses its evolution as an essential document for institutional planning, programme development, quality assurance, and sustainable growth. It explains the concept of an academic brief and highlights its importance in guiding academic planning, human resource development, infrastructure planning, financial management, institutional expansion, monitoring and evaluation, evidence-based decision-making, and regulatory compliance. Finally, practical recommendations are offered to strengthen the preparation, implementation, periodic review, and digitalization of academic briefs in Nigerian universities. The paper concludes that an up-to-date and well-implemented academic brief is indispensable for achieving academic excellence, institutional stability, quality assurance, and sustainable university development in Nigeria.
